New mobile app launched for 94th AW

DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Ga. --  The 94th Airlift Wing recently launched a free mobile app to keep wing members and their families informed.

The app gives people quick access to information about local events, drill weekend dates, the wing mission, the base, local weather, links to U.S. Air Force guidance, mission videos and more, said Col. Patrick Campbell, 94th Operations Group commander and lead planner for the new app’s creation. The app is currently available for download in the Google PlayStore or iTunes.

Today, almost everyone has a smartphone. Many no longer own computers or even a tablet, Campbell said. With the mobile app, Airmen will have useful information at their fingertips without the need to log into a computer.

Although the app has been active for only a short time, 1st Lt. Elizabeth Van Patten, 94th Maintenance Squadron officer, said she has already found it useful in a variety of ways.

“I needed a recording of the Air Force Song for a change of command ceremony,” she said. “The app has the song available as a quick button link.”

Van Patten, who assisted with the app’s creation, also noted its ability to push info notifications to users quickly. She explained this feature could be very useful in notifying Airmen of unexpected events, such as an inclement weather reporting delay.

“It’s just an easy way to get the word out,” said Van Patten, adding that the app is not intended to replace other formal Air Force info notification channels.

The app is live, fully functional and available to anyone with a smartphone, said Van Patten. Improvement and development of the app’s features will continue as more people begin to use it.

“The app is only the beginning. As technology advances, we must keep pace,” said Campbell. “What’s next in communication technology? I don’t know, but whatever it is, we must be ready.”
